Rules of Conduct
SACRAMENTO PUBLIC LIBRARY provides access to library services. Library users have the right to expect the Library to maintain a safe setting. For the safety and comfort of our users:
  • It is not advisable to leave children unattended. The Library is not responsible for the safety of children that are left unattended in or on the grounds of the library.
  • Shoes or other footwear must be worn in the library.
  • A shirt or other covering over the upper body must be worn in the library by users over the age of 10.
  • Be aware of your personal property. The Library is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen or damaged in or on the grounds of the library.
Library users are expected to comply with library rules. The following are prohibited in the Sacramento Public Library:
  1. Any activity which unreasonably interferes with any person’s comfort or safety, including but not limited to:
    • Disturbing others by loud or unreasonable noise, or using offensive language, gestures or behavior which reasonably could be expected to disturb other users or staff.
    • Staring at another person or persons with the intent to annoy that person.
    • Using audio or personal equipment that disturbs others or interferes with library service.
  2. Food, drink, smoking or prolonged sleeping.
  3. Bicycles, skates, skateboards, backpacks, luggage and other items that take up seating space or create a safety hazard.
  4. Vandalizing or abusing library materials, equipment or facilities.
  5. Alcohol or drug use; or being under the infl uence of either.
  6. Offensive, pervasive odor.
  7. Use of the restroom for personal bathing or laundry.
  8. Animals other than service animals.
  9. Firearms or other dangerous or deadly weapons.
The Library reserves the right to inspect briefcases, backpacks or other personal property for library materials.

The Library reserves the right to require users to leave the building and grounds if they are not engaged in activities associated with the use of a public library, such as reading, studying, using library materials, quiet contemplation or other library activities.

Violation of any of the above rules or other library regulations shall warrant exclusion from the library and grounds.
